10-year interdisciplinary monitoring of organic stocklass, vegetable rotations at Warwick-HRI, Kirton, South Lincolnshire, UK Organic Eprints
Schmutz, U; Rayns, F; Sumpton, P.
Interdisciplinary monitoring of an organic stockless farming system has been carried out over ten years on a fertile silty clay loam in the main vegetable production area of the UK. The results draw together economic outcomes with agronomy, soil science and agro-ecology. Organic management has been used at the Kirton research site since conversion of a 3.2 ha unit in 1997. There is great variability in crop yields and marketing results but overall a successful ongoing vegetable production system has been established. Soil fertility, weeds, pests and diseases have been managed successfully without imports of animal manures or green waste compost. Production costs are well controlled and marketable yields are good. However, because the site is a research...

A better nitrogen use to improve organic wheat production Organic Eprints
Doltra, Jordi.
Different crop management strategies are investigated in representative soils and climatic conditions of Denmark to enhance the yield and quality of organic wheat. The agronomic practices include the use of manure, catch crops and the composition of the crop rotation. Among these, manure application was the main factor affecting yields. Model predictions indicate that wheat yield could be improved by increasing manure nitrogen.

A comparison between organic and integrated apple production: First results after 5 years of observation Organic Eprints
Kreuzwieser, Andreas; Kelderer, Markus.
Organic apple production is of increasing commercial importance throughout Europe, but especially in South Tyrol where about 25% of the whole European organic apple crop is produced. In organic apple production, producers face the challenge of choosing varieties that are both in demand and also resistant to the main pests and diseases. Every now and then, the question arises, if yields, losses and profitability are different in integrated and organic orchards and in how great are the differences between single apple varieties. In 1999 the Laimburg Research Centre started a field trial to observe the effects of different cultivation methods on 18 apple varieties in a randomised block design. In the first four years of production, significant...

A Comparison of Plant and Animal Based Fertiliser for the Production of Organic Vegetable Transplants Organic Eprints
Koller, Martin; Alföldi, Thomas; Siegrist, S.; Weibel, Franco.
In Switzerland, transplants for organic vegetable growing have been fertilised traditionally with slaughterhouse by-products. In autumn 2000, the Swiss government restricted the use of such products because of the BSE crisis. To maintain the production of organic transplants, alternative fertilisers needed to be tested. Eleven alternatives to horn powder (standard fertiliser) were selected based on the organic standards of the European Union, including feather powder (as an animal based product without BSE risk). The products were mixed with a standard growing media for organic transplants in a concentration of 300 mg nitrogen L-1 growing media. Different experiments where set up with head lettuce (Lactuca sativa), Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var....

A cseresznyelégy elleni védekezés lehetősége Beauveria bassiana hatóanyagú készítménnyel Organic Eprints

A ‘during-infection’ spray strategy using sulphur compounds, copper, silicon and a new formulation of potassium bicarbonate for primary scab control in organic apple production. Organic Eprints
Jamar, Laurent; Lefrancq, Bruno; Fassotte, Christianne; Lateur, Marc.
In a field experiment conducted over two growing seasons, the effectiveness and phytotoxicity of inorganic fungicides such as sulphur, lime sulphur, copper, silicon and Armicarb (a new formulation of potassium bicarbonate) was compared with water for the control of primary apple scab infections in Belgium on high, medium and low scab-susceptible cultivars (cvs. ‘Pinova’, ‘Pirouette’ and ‘Reinette des Capucins’, respectively). In order to drastically reduce the amount of fungicide applied in the orchard, two approaches were used: (i) a strategy involving spraying during the infection process, just before conditions for infection had been fulfilled according to the RIMpro software warning system; and (ii) a tunnel sprayer machine for treatment applications....

A guide to organic grassland Organic Eprints
Philipps, Lois.
Organic farming systems in the UK are traditionally based on ley/arable crop rotations. Up to 70% of the farmed area comprises of mixed grass and legume leys. These leys offer a powerful mechanism for supplying nitrogen through their potential to harvest biologically fixed nitrogen to support both animal production and a subsequent phase of arable cropping. This bulletin answers some of the common questions about organic grassland management.

A Hedonic Price Analysis for the New Zealand Wine Industry: Preliminary Results AgEcon
Bicknell, Kathryn; Friesen, Lana; MacDonald, Ian.
This paper presents preliminary results from a hedonic price analysis of premium wines in New Zealand over the vintages 1994 – 2003. Implicit prices are presented for a sensory quality rating, as well as wine variety and regional reputation. Results show that the price premium associated with Michael Cooper's five-star quality rating is highly significant and increasing in magnitude over the study period. Trends in regional and varietal preferences are also explored.

A MINŐSÉGMENEDZSMENT A HAZAI BAROMFI-FELDOLGOZÁSBAN AgEcon
Mikaczo, Andrea.

A mixed model applied to joint analysis in experiments with coffee blends using the least squares method Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Paulino,Allana Lívia Beserra; Cirillo,Marcelo Angelo; Ribeiro,Diego Egídio; Borém,Flávio Meira; Matias,Gabriel Carvalho.
ABSTRACT The aim of the present study was to propose a mixed model for a sensory analysis of four experiments with blends of different standards of quality, including the species Coffea Arabica L. and Coffea Canephora. Each experiment differed in the proportions used to formulate the blends and the concentrations used in preparing the beverages, these being 7% and 10% coffee powder for each 100 ml of water. The response variables under analysis were the sensory characteristics of the beverage found in an assessment made by a group of trained tasters, considering taste, bitterness and a final score. Each description followed a numerical rating scale of intensity that ranged from 0 to 10. The model was implemented using the least squares method; this led to...

A new family, Pervetustaceae with a new genus, Pervetustus, and P. simplex sp. nov. (Paraglomerales), and a new genus, Innospora with I. majewskii comb. nov. (Paraglomeraceae) in the Glomeromycotina Organic Eprints
Błaszkowski, Janusz; Kozłowska, Anna; Crossay, Thomas; Symanczik, Sarah; Al-Yahya'ei, Mohamed N..
A new arbuscular mycorrhizal, Paraglomus-like, fungal species (Glomeromycotina) was found and propagated in single-species cultures established from spores coming from Oman, Greece, Tunisia, and New Caledonia. The hyaline spores of the fungus are small, 17–67 μm diam. when globose. Their spore wall consists of an evanescent, 1.0–2.3 μm thick, short-lived outer layer and a laminate, smooth, 3.8–7.3 μm thick inner layer, of which none shows amyloid or dextrinoid reaction in Melzer's reagent. Mycorrhizal structures (arbuscules and hyphae without vesicles) of the fungus stained slightly in Trypan blue, thus like those of the formerly described Paraglomus spp., in which the histochemical feature has been recognized. However, in the phylogenies gained from...

A new genus, Desertispora, and a new species, Diversispora sabulosa, in the family Diversisporaceae (order Diversisporales, subphylum Glomeromycotina) Organic Eprints
Symanczik, Sarah; Al-Yahya'ei, Mohamed N.; Kozłowska, Anna; Ryszka, Przemysław; Błaszkowski, Janusz.
Phylogenetic analyses of sequences of the SSU–ITS–LSU nrDNA segment and the RPB1 gene showed that the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus originally described as Diversispora omaniana does not belong to the genus Diversispora, but represents a separate clade at the rank of genus in the family Diversisporaceae of the order Diversisporales. The closest natural relatives of the fungus proved to be species of the genera Corymbiglomus and Redeckera. Consequently, the new genus was named Desertispora, and Di. omaniana was renamed De. omaniana comb. nov. In addition, the morphological and histochemical features of spores and mycorrhizal structures of a new Diversispora sp., Di. sabulosa, were described and the closest relatives of the species were determined based on...

A new integrative assessment indicator for damage caused by major pests and diseases in the vineyard Organic Eprints
Delbac, L; Constant, N; Laveau, E; Thiéry, D; Smits, N; Roudet, J; Mérot, A; Wéry, J; Fermaud, M.
An original and integrative evaluation indicator has been developed to quantify the cumulated damage from major pests and diseases affecting grape bunches: downy mildew, powdery mildew, gray mould and tortricid moths. It made it possible to estimate the associated crop losses and to relate them to the plant protection strategy in different modes of production (organic farming, in-transition, conventional). Thus, overall plant losses were higher in 2012 than in 2011. The in-transition growers’ strategy, with reduced copper doses but increased numbers of sprays, led to a 20% increase in average severity on bunches (essentially due to Downy mildew). The more pragmatic approach of experienced organic growers and conventional ones (higher doses and fewer...
